Ephesians 4:1-2
“I [Paul] therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,”
Over the next few weeks we will be looking at the first two verses from Ephesians chapter 4. There is so, so much in these short verses which means we will be breaking down each topic into its own blog article. For today, we will look at where we are headed and then start things off with Part 1.
We are going to tackle Ephesians 4:1-2 by answering 3 questions which will (hopefully) help us learn what Paul is trying to tell us in these verses. Let’s not waste any more time and jump right into a brief outline. If you haven’t done so yet, please take the time to read the verses at the top.
Question #1 - Who are you?
The first question we will be looking at in our quest to learn about these verses is, “Who are you?” Paul is writing to a certain group of people in these verses. It is essential to find out who they are and how it relates to us. This is very important because it leads into the next question….
Question #2 - What are we supposed to do?
Now we are getting to the heart of the matter. This question helps give us direction and shows us what God is calling us to do. God doesn’t want us to sit on our butts and stare at the wall. He made us to be a person who acts. A person who takes part in the world around them. We will explore this question more later, so let’s move onto the last question.
Question #3 - How are we supposed to do what we do?
We know we are supposed to do something...that’s great. But, we also need to know how we are supposed to do it. For example, there are many ways to respond when a coach or a boss asks you to clean up after practice or work. You can complain, do it joyfully, or perhaps make somebody else do it. The cleaning is still being done, but maybe not in the way it was supposed to be. We want to be people who do the right things in the right way.
Homework:
Before we get into the rest of the articles, your homework is to reread the verses above and:- Try to answer the 3 questions based on what Ephesians 4:1-2 says. What parts of the verse answer each question?
Don’t worry, you don’t have to get it right, but just thinking about these things will really help you as we move on through the series.
Keep checking the blog for the rest of the series where we answer each question above in much more detail.
